About Me

My story

I have worked within the community for most of my life. When l was a teenager l volunteered in the local summer camps. In my 20’s l worked in a community centre in the local area interacting with people from all walks of life.

When l reached my 30’s, l started to work in a charity for long-term homeless alcoholics with multiple physical and mental health issues. It was while working in this environment that l returned to education for my certificate in addiction studies.

I developed a passion for the therapeutic setting, leading me to get my degree in counselling and psychotherapy. Since 2014 l have worked in several different services, helping people to work through their mental health difficulties.

My Counselling Approach

I feel that every person deserves to be treated with respect, kindness and patience. It’s not always easy for a person to approach counselling for the first time and it can be overwhelming.

It is my belief that when people are given a safe, inviting space where they are listened to intently, understood with no judgement, a trusting therapeutic relationship can develop and the healing process can begin.

Therapy is a unique journey for each person, the counselling experience should be tailored around their individual needs and at their pace.

Therapy is not a quick fix, it is a journey, for each person that journey is different. When we work together, I provide a safe therapeutic space, with empathy, trust and a non-judgemental environment. It is not my place to judge your choices, thoughts or decisions, it is my role to help you find your way through the challenges you are facing.

I believe in working with the person, not just the symptoms. So, when we work together, we will look at many different aspects of your life. By unravelling the ball of yarn in your head, you can build resilience, confidence and self-esteem.

This provides you with a solid foundation to gain new insights into negative thoughts, and assumptions that may be standing in the way of your quality of life. To learn new skills and tools to empower you in the present and in future hurdles.

I believe there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy. There will be no set agenda during this process, I follow your lead, you are the one that knows you best. In my work, I use an integrative approach, using several different forms of therapy so that working collaboratively we can find the best outcome for you.

Listed below is a sample of the therapies used:

Woman in Field

Person-Centred Therapy

Empathy - understanding the thoughts and feelings as the client experiences them.

Congruence – being genuine and real, helping the client build trust with the therapist. This helps the client feel valued, build self-esteem and learn to trust in their own judgement.

Unconditional Positive Regard – no judgement! Enabling the client to open up and speak about their difficulties without fear of being criticised or judged.

Resting in the Road

(CBT) Cognative Behavioural Therapy

Our thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and behaviour are all connected, and what we think and do affects the way we feel. Looking at:

  • Core beliefs (views learnt in childhood),

  • Dysfunctional assumptions (distorted perceptions)

  • Automatic Negative Thoughts
    (involuntary negative perceptions of reality)

I work with the client to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and to learn practical self-help strategies.

Psychoeducation

Providing knowledge, accurate information and tools to improve a client’s mental health outcomes.

During this time, clients are encouraged to ask questions as new symptoms emerge or as their situation changes.

This helps clients to be empowered to make healthier decisions for themselves even after therapy has ended.
